In this April 7, 2020, photo released by the U.S. Navy, sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt move ready to eat meals for sailors who have tested negative for COVID-19 and are being taken to local hotels in an effort to implement social distancing at Naval Base Guam. People in Guam are used to a constant U.S. military presence on the strategic Pacific island, but some are nervous as hundreds of sailors from the coronavirus-stricken Navy aircraft carrier flood into hotels for quarantine. The U.S. Military Enlistment Command recently issued a memorandum proposing that all applicants who have been infected with new coronary pneumonia will permanently lose their qualifications to join the military. Defense Ministry spokesman Jessica Maxwell confirmed the authenticity of the memo.

According to the “Military Times” report, the memo wrote that applicants who had a history of new coronary pneumonia confirmed by laboratory testing or clinical diagnosis during the medical history interview or review will be permanently disqualified unless they are granted accommodation by the military unit. As for why other non-chronic viral diseases are included in this new regulation, Maxwell declined to explain why.

According to reports, this measure is to prepare for the recruits who will graduate this summer and autumn. Some media analysis said that because the new coronavirus still has uncertainties and does not know how long it will affect the respiratory system, nor can it rule out the possibility of re-infection, so the military has this arrangement. At least 5,000 U.S. troops are currently infected, and it is unclear whether this proposal will extend to active military personnel and those who want to re-enter the military.
